When M-Audio joined the Avid group a few years back, it was widely assumed that their product range would sit beneath that of their new siblings Digidesign. It is my opinion, after months of research before buying it, that the Profire is the best firewire interface in it's price range.M-Audio's new interface is equipped with eight mic preamps, eight analogue outputs and an impressive range of digital I/O - all of which has been crammed into a 1U rack and given a very attractive price-tag. When it came time to get another interface, there was no question- especially since they are half the price now. I bought a Profire 2626 when they cost $700 and had to sell it to pay the mortgage. The current project is up to 18 tracks, and climbing, and is running like a champ so far. I have tracked 8 drum mics without a hitch and the D to A conversion has not had any latency problems.

It is performing wonderfully with Cubase Essentials on a PC Audio Labs computer built in 2006 with Windows XP. I could not afford a mixing console with firewire capability, so I decided to convert A to D and work in the box. My primary purpose for purchasing this unit was as a firewire interface. The integrated direct inputs for instruments on channels 1 & 2 are so convenient. Phantom power and pads on all 8 analog inputs are a nice feature. As a stand alone mixer, the Profire shines. The mic pre's are very quiet with plenty of head room.
